Bruce Springsteen／『Greatest Hits』

また悲しいニュースが流れた。Bruce Springsteen の曲で、そしてライブで欠かせない The E Street Band のメンバーである Clarence Clemons が現地時間の12日に起こした脳卒中による合併症で18日の夜7時頃に亡くなった。

Bruce のファン・サイト backstreets.com でも Clarence の追悼ページが設けられ、Bruce との熱いステージの写真が幾つも掲載されている。

Bruce と Clarence の関係は1973年の『Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.』から現時点での最新スタジオ・アルバム、2009年の『Working on a Dream』まで続いた。途中 Bruce は The E Street Band と離れもしたが、関係が復活した以降も2000年代後半には3年連続でスタジオ・アルバムをリリースしていた。

この『Greatest Hits』は1995年にリリースされた Bruce 初のベスト盤。英米双方のアルバム・チャートで No.1 を記録し、Clarence のサックスが聴きどころの曲も幾つか収録されている。

ステージでは常に Bruce と兄弟のように振る舞っていた Clarence。豪快にサックスを吹くシーンでは、ロックな曲でサックスという楽器はこんなに素晴らしいんだと教えられた。

残念ながら Bruce のステージは日本ではあまり見られず、『Born In The U.S.A.』のヒットを受けて初来日した代々木第一体育館でのステージが唯一 The E Street Band と組んだフルのステージだった。

このときのステージでも Clarence はステージの傍らに常に準備をしていて、いざ出番が来るとスポットライトを浴びて豪快なソロを披露してくれた。ナマのライブなので見ている側も Clarence のパートが近づくとそわそわし始め、そのソロ・パートが始まった瞬間には大きな歓声が上がったものだった。

自らの出番以外のときも Bruce の歌に合わせてその大きな体をくねらせリズムを取っていた。白人の Bruce と黒人の Clarence という関係は最初不思議に感じたが、PV やナマのライブを見たらそんなことを感じたことをとても恥ずかしく思った。

Clarence といえばサックスだが、ステージ上では他にもパーカッションも担当していた。サックスを吹くときより控えめにパーカッションを打ち鳴らす Clarence だったが、その存在は Bruce のステージに欠かせないものだった。

最近も音楽活動を続けていた Clarence だが、ステージ上では椅子に腰掛けてのプレイと、体調が思わしくない様子だった。そんな矢先にフロリダの自宅で脳卒中で倒れたとニュースが駆け巡り、一時回復の兆しも…と報じられていたので、今日19日の昼前後にネットに流れた訃報には間違いであって欲しいと願った。

1942年1月11日生まれ。バージニア州ノーフォークの出身で、現在はフロリダ州のパーム・ビーチに住んでいた Clarence。69歳だった。
