Paul Weller／『Live at Braehead』

最近 AV アンプと DVD/CD プレーヤーの様々なパラメータ設定を見直し、いろいろなライブ盤や映画のソフトで、その効果を確かめているが、その中で、また音質の良いことを確認できたのが、Paul Weller が2003年にリリースしたライブ盤の『Live at Braehead』だった。

この DVD は輸入盤でのリリース情報を聞き、即購入したのだが、リージョンコードが日本では再生できない「1」だったため、なんとかいろいろな工夫して手元の DVD プレーヤで見ることができた。国内盤のリリースは輸入盤に遅れること半年以上が経った翌2004年の春だった。

この当時に限らず、CD も DVD もパッケージとしてメディアが売れないとよく言われるが、国内盤が輸入盤より半年も遅れてのリリースでは、本当に見たい(or 聴きたい)ファンは輸入盤の購入に流れてしまうだろう。DVD ではリージョン・コードの件もあるが、こういう点が機会損失に繋がっていることをメーカー側も考え、リリース時期は考慮してもらいたいのだが…。

少し、話が反れてしまった。

このライブ盤の内容に話を戻すと、このライブは2002年10月16日のスコットランド公演の模様が収められている。会場となった Glasgow の Braehead で初めて行なわれたライブ・コンサートだったようで、この会場では2日間のライブが行なわれ、その2日目にプレイされた30曲、約2時間にわたるコンサートの模様が収められている。

このコンサートでは当時の最新アルバム『Illumination』に収められた『A Bullet For Everyone』でスタート。2曲目にソロ活動初期のシングル『Into Tomorrow』がプレイされるなど、ここまでに発表された6枚のアルバムから幅広い曲がプレイされた。

また、加えて The Jam 時代の曲『Man In The Corner Shop』、『In The Crowd』、『Pretty Green』、『Town Called Malice』もプレイされ、The Style Council 時代の曲も『Down In The Seine』、『Man of Great Promise』の2曲が続けてプレイされた。

The Jam 時代の曲は2001年にリリースされたライブ盤『Days of Speed』でも披露されていたが、この時はアコースティック・アレンジでのプレイだった。The Jam 時代の曲のホール・クラスでのライブが収められたのは、この『Live at Braehead』が初めてだった。

この時のライブのメンバーは、The Style Council 時代から親交のあるドラマー Steve White に加え、ギターとベースに Ocean Colour Scene の Steve Cradock と Damon Minchella が参加。この4人の組合せは、2005年にリリースされた『As Is Now』の頃まで続く長いラインアップになった。

充実したラインアップによる1970年代終盤から2002年までの20年に及ぶ長いキャリアから選ばれた30曲は、そのどれも聴き応えがあって、dts による 5.1ch 音声ではその雰囲気がさらに増していた。特にライブ終盤にプレイされた5曲、『The Changingman』以降の『Wild Wood』まではまさに圧巻! The Jam 時代の『Town Called Malice』を含めたこの豪華な5曲は滅多に聴けないセットリストで、この5曲だけでも『Live at Braehead』を観る価値はあるだろう。
