Paul Weller／『free soul - the classic of Paul Weller』

今回はいつも楽しく拝見している同じ So-net ブログの DEBDYLAN さんが取り上げている "PAUL WELLER (ポール･ウェラー) 『FREE SOUL. the classic of PAUL WELLER』" に便乗させて頂いて、こちらでも、このコンピレーション・アルバムのことを。

DEBDYLAN さんも紹介しているこのアルバムは、2007年の秋に free soul シリーズの1つとしてリリースされたアルバム。2007年当時、Paul Weller は2005年にスタジオ・アルバム『As Is Now』をリリースした後で、再び全英アルバム・チャートで No.1 を記録する『22 Dreams』は翌2008年夏にリリースされる。

『As Is Now』は久々に好きなオリジナル・アルバムで、その前年の2004年には Paul がお気に入りの曲をカバーしたアルバム『Studio 150』をリリースと、久々に Paul が積極的な活動を見せていた頃に、このコンピレーション・アルバムはリリースされた。

The Jam や The Style Council 時代の曲を織り交ぜたアルバムは、2006年に Paul も『hit parade』というタイトルのベスト盤をリリースし、『Studio 150』の全英セールスでのシルバー・ディスク、続く『As Is Now』でのゴールド・ディスク認定に続き、『hit parade』は更にその上のプラティナ・ディスクに認定され、Paul の母国イギリスでも、それまでのキャリアが再び注目されていた。

『hit parade』にも The Jam や The Style Council 時代の曲が選ばれていて、1枚に23曲を収めたバージョンに加え、The Jam 時代から21曲、The Style Council 時代から18曲、そしてソロ活動から28曲を4枚の CD に収めたボックスもリリースされた。

『hit parade』には『As Is Now』からのシングルもあったが、『free soul - the classic of Paul Weller』はその前のアルバム『Studio 150』までが対象だったり、後者には珍しいレアなバージョンもあったりと、お互い、その選曲の妙が楽しめるアルバムだった。

生粋の Paul ファンからすれば、1枚の CD に「あの曲がない! なんでこの曲が?」と言われてしまう、この手のコンピレーション・アルバムだが、「自分以外が選ぶと、こういう曲が取り上げられるのか?!」という発見もあって、これはこれで面白い内容と思った。

『free soul - the classic of Paul Weller』がリリースされたとき、レアなバージョンがあるという情報を聞き、その収録曲を見ながら手元にあるアルバムからプレイリストを作ってみたら、『free soul - the classic of Paul Weller』と同じ内容が作れてしまったので、結局、このコンピレーション・アルバムは手に入れなかったが、「Paul Weller が作った曲って、どんなのがあるの?」という方には、このアルバムは入門編としていいかもしれない。

The Jam 時代、The Style Council 時代で曲のスタイルは大きく変わっているし、Paul はソロ時代でも様々なスタイルの曲があるので、気に入った曲があったら、次はその曲を含むスタジオ・アルバムを聴いてみるのもいいと思う。
